The situation

A shop that sells something genuinely good, run by people who know an enormous amount about it, posting nothing for three weeks and then four things in one evening because they felt guilty.

That isn't a content problem. It's that the writing happens at the wrong time — during the month it covers, in the gaps, by somebody who has already done a full day behind a counter.

A cheesemonger's busy season is no time to be writing captions.

The shape, and why it's the shape

Everything lands before the month it covers. The month's posts, the newsletter, the shot list and last month's read all arrive in the week beforehand, so the shop is never scrambling. Then the month runs like this:

  • Week one — one filming session covers the month. The newsletter goes out on the first Thursday.
  • Weeks two and three — they post; I make small changes as things change. A sell-out, a new wheel in, an event.
  • Week four — twenty minutes: three numbers, what moved, what I'm changing next month.

The two things that aren't in the Growth Check-In

One — the newsletter, written and ready to send

Not a template. An actual month's edition, written: the cheese of the month with a reason to care about it, what to do with it, a story from the counter, and the tasting on the last Thursday. Plus thirty subject lines banked, so the newsletter never stares at a blank page.

The feed finds new people. The list keeps the ones who already love the shop — and those are the ones who come back on a Saturday.

Two — the month-end read, on one page

Three numbers, what moved, what's changing. Twenty minutes to read, which is the amount of time a shop owner actually has.

Illustrative figures — this is an invented business. In a live retainer these are the client's own numbers.

What moved: the single "cheese of the month" post outsold a week of general posts. Naming one wheel and telling its story beats showing the whole counter — people want to be told what to buy, not handed a catalogue.

What didn't: the Tuesday opening-hours reminders got nothing. They're admin, not content. Dropped, and the space goes back into stories about the cheese.

The surprise: the newsletter drove more tasting bookings than every social post combined. The list is small, but it's the people who already love the shop — worth more than reach.

Without the read, a retainer is just posting.

Why one page and not ten

A ten-page analytics report gets filed and forgotten. One page — three numbers, what moved, what's changing — gets read, and because it gets read it actually changes what happens next month. That's the difference between a retainer that renews and one that quietly doesn't.

Each read ends with the one number I'm watching. Here it's newsletter sign-ups at the till, because the list out-earns the feed and growing it is the cheapest lever the shop has. Naming one number is what stops a retainer drifting into a subscription for posts.

What it should be judged on

Whether the shop is calmer, and whether the number named at the end of each read moved. Not follower count — a cheesemonger with four thousand followers and an empty Saturday has bought nothing.

And the terms say the same thing: unlimited small changes, and you can stop any month with no notice period. It earns the renewal or it doesn't.

Rennet & Rind is an invented cheesemonger, built to show the two components a retainer adds beyond the monthly plan. Every figure in the month-end read is illustrative and labelled as such.

Six pages: what the retainer adds, how a month runs, the written newsletter, thirty send ideas, and the month-end read.
